FAN CHART MAKER – USER INSTRUCTIONS by PrintableUtils --- 1. HOW TO OPEN THE TOOL --- This tool works offline and does not require installation. 1. Locate the file: fan-chart-maker-vX.html 2. Double-click the file 3. It will open automatically in your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, etc.) Works on both Windows and Mac. --- 2. HOW TO USE THE TOOL --- The screen is divided into two sections: LEFT SIDE: You enter and edit ancestor information RIGHT SIDE: Live preview of your fan chart Steps: 1. Enter names into the “Full Name” fields 2. Add birth and death years (optional) 3. The chart updates instantly on the right side 4. Scroll the preview area if needed Notes: * You can leave fields empty * Missing ancestors remain as blank segments * The layout is automatic and requires no manual positioning --- 3. GENERATIONS --- The chart starts with 3 generations: Generation 1: Target person (center) Generation 2: Parents Generation 3: Grandparents Controls: Add Generation Adds another generation (up to a maximum of 7) Remove Generation Removes the outermost generation (minimum is 3) --- 4. TEXT AND FORMATTING --- Font Size Controls: Ancestor Font Size Controls text size for all outer generations Target Person Font Size Controls text size for the center person Notes: * Font size is manually controlled * Text does not auto-resize * Large font sizes may overflow intentionally Line Breaks in Names: You can force a line break using the # character. Example: John Michael#Smith This will display as two lines in the chart. The # character will not appear in the preview or exported image. --- 5. BUTTONS EXPLAINED --- Add Generation Adds one more generation to the chart Remove Generation Removes the outermost generation Clear All Data Resets the chart to 3 blank generations Export JPEG Saves the chart as a high-quality image File name: genealogy-fan-chart.jpg Export JSON Saves your data so you can edit it later Import JSON Loads previously saved data back into the tool --- 6. SAVING YOUR WORK --- This tool does NOT save automatically. To avoid losing your work: Option 1 (Recommended) * Click "Export JSON" * Save the file to your computer * Import it later to continue editing Option 2 * Export as JPEG (image only, not editable) --- 7. EXPORTING YOUR FAN CHART --- 1. Click "Export JPEG" 2. The image will download automatically File details: * Resolution: 6600px x 5100px * Format: JPEG * White background included Notes: * Designed for printing (landscape layout) * Export includes only the chart preview * What you see is what you get --- 8. PRINTING --- Recommended settings: * Orientation: Landscape * Paper size: Letter or A4 * Scale: Fit to page or 100% You can print at home or use a print shop. --- 9. COMPATIBILITY NOTES --- * Works on Windows and Mac * Works in modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari) * No internet connection required after opening file If something looks incorrect: * Try a different browser * Make sure you are using the original file --- 10.
